UMA webinar recording now available

User-Managed Access (UMA) lets web application creators easily craft systems that give control of data back to the people. Any web-based data ecosystem can leverage UMA, including eHealth and eGov portals, social networking sites, photo sharing portals, and personal data stores. It offers individuals centralized security, privacy, and control for sharing data with friends and family, business associates, and organizations. And it allows apps to offer sophisticated privacy and sharing options without a lot of software development. One UMA implementation, the SMART system from Newcastle University, leverages Facebook friends for sharing; others could use the new Google+ Circles system, which allows sharing within circles of contacts. Announcing User-Managed Access: UMA Gives Data-Sharing Power to the People

Kantara Initiative has announced the release of a Draft Recommendation for the User-Managed Access (UMA) protocol. UMA heralds a new era of user-centric access control for web-based applications such as social networking sites, content-sharing portals, and personal clouds. PISCATAWAY, NJ, USA – July 7, 2011 – As we spend more time online, our data becomes more prolific and widely dispersed across sites. Data privacy and security have become onerous issues. Kantara Initiative’s User-Managed Access Work Group (UMA WG) has published a Draft Recommendation for a user-managed data access protocol and contributed it to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards body to solve these problems. UMA lets web application creators easily craft systems that give control of data back to the people. Any web-based data ecosystem can leverage UMA, including eHealth and eGov portals, social networking sites, photo sharing portals, and personal data stores. It offers individuals centralized security, privacy, and control for sharing data with friends and family, business associates, and organizations. And it allows apps to offer sophisticated privacy and sharing options without a lot of software development. Aad van Moorsel, Director of the Newcastle University Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security, says: “The UK government will increasingly offer Internet-based services. The data shared in such services can be sensitive since it may include employment history, exam results or health information. UMA provides the technology to share such data safely, putting the citizen in control. We strongly believe UMA will be a cornerstone for future eGov services, and are working to publish our SMART software as an Open Source UMA implementation.” Mario Hoffmann, Head of Secure Services & Quality Testing of Fraunhofer AISEC, remarks: “User empowerment serves as a key enabler for trustworthy and trusted service usage on the Internet. UMA supports developers through a security -and privacy-by-design approach. The user-centric concept of UMA is the basis for managing access policies to personal, data, claims, and attributes in a unified, balanced and comfortable way.” Drummond Reed, Founder and Chairman of Connect.Me, comments: “This milestone for UMA could not come at a better time – interest in user-managed data sharing is exploding. Social networks have made people more comfortable with online sharing, and now UMA brings us a standard way for users to share data across many different sites and services without losing control of that information. ITAC Supports OECD Multistakeholder Approach

All - You may have heard this via other lists, but I wanted to close the loop with Kantara about our involvement with the Internet Technical Advisory Committee (ITAC) to the OECD. Specifically, as it relates to the communique published this week. As a reminder, ITAC was formed in 2009 as a mechanism to provide neutral technical advice to the OECD. We joined the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC), Civil Society Information Society Advisory Committee (CSISAC), and Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) around the table of OECD member states. As part of the "OECD High Level Meeting On The Internet Economy" held in Paris this week, we were asked (for the first time) to directly participate in the drafting of, and become a direct signatory to, a "Communiqué on Principles for Internet Policy-Making". Working on this was a fascinating illustration of the multistakeholder process in action. Up until this point, these communiques and similar declarations have been made entirely by the OECD member states (often with input from the advisory committees, but without requiring their buy-in). This time, however, we were full participants in the discussions, negotiations, and ultimate decision-making. What sets this one apart is that the previous declarations required buy-in by members who follow a more traditional model of hierarchical decision-making. The inclusion of the advisory councils introduced a more dynamic, loose coalition representing more consensus-oriented entities across a broad spectrum of interests. The result was both more inclusive, as well as having the potential to be more contentious. During the process, it became clear that some interests required more careful balancing in light of the expanded set of participants. As the deadline for the approval of the document at the high level meeting loomed, engaged participants worked long, hard hours together to maximize agreement and minimize disagreement. While a vast majority of the statements in the document were entirely non-contentious (as was the primary goal), a few points remained outside the realm of full consensus. Fortunately, the majority of participants, including ITAC, were ultimately comfortable with the final version and signed on. The attending members all worked closely together on this communique, and it clearly represents a collaborative effort to build and represent consensus that helped improve the final document. Also, you'll notice that the only two comments showcased on the OECD announcement page are members of ITAC: Vint Cerf (representing NRO) and Tim Berners-Lee (W3C). That speaks volumes about how highly they value our participation. I will try to attend the P3WG call next Thursday to report out on the meeting and answer any questions (on the communique, the process, or our report to the committee). Finally, many (many) thanks to all of the ITAC members who worked hard on this communique both prior to and during the meeting. I'm not kidding when I say it took loooong hours to get done. John is a Identity Domain expert in the Alexandria, VA office of Protiviti Government Services. He also serves as Kantara’sLeadership Council Co-chair & Federation Interoperability Work Group Chair. John has been active with Kantara since it’s inception. As an experienced IT professional with a diverse background, John has been co-authoring the ICAM protocol profiles at Protiviti Government Services. He has also been coordinating interoperability testing on the profiles with OASIS and Trust Framework partners from industry. John has contributed to SAML, openID, Information Card (IMI), XRI and other identity standards. He is actively working to develop the next version of openID. John is originally from Canada and lives in Chile. Dear Kantara Community, You may have been aware that I was out on an unexpected medical leave from part of April through most of May. I can happily report that I am back in action and reporting in full time as usual. I'd like to personally thank each of you who sent / shared well wishes for a speedy recovery. I very much appreciated your thoughts and they continually brightened my days and reminded me of why I am so proud to be a part of our work and community! CA Technologies, IBM Corporation, SAP AG and UNINETT pass Kantara Initiative SAML 2.0 Full-Matrix Interoperability Testing

Kantara Initiative today announced that identity management products from CA Technologies, IBM Corporation, SAP AG, and UNINETT passed the Kantara Initiative SAML 2.0 Full-Matrix Interoperability testing. Piscataway, NJ – May 10, 2011 – Kantara Initiative sponsored the test event for the purpose of testing the interoperability of implementations in accordance with the SAML 2.0 specifications. The event was conducted by the Drummond Group Inc. (DGI) with oversight from the Kantara Interoperability Review Board (IRB). The Web-based full-matrix testing allows vendors to participate from anywhere in the world and features rigorous processes for ensuring products meet SAML 2.0 interoperability requirements for open, secure and privacy-respecting federated identity management. The testing itself was conducted from January 10 to March 1, 2011. “SAML 2.0 has proven to be critical to how cross-domain security is enabled both between enterprises and between enterprises and cloud service providers,” said Matthew Gardiner, director at CA Technologies and president of Kantara Initiative. “Organizations can count on the Kantara Initiative testing process to certify products that have proven to meet rigorous interoperability requirements. This certification process should serve as a key business enabler as more and more sensitive applications cross Web domains.” This is the first SAML full-matrix interoperability test event sponsored by the Kantara Initiative, continuing the program it inherited from the Liberty Alliance. Full-matrix testing is the best means to verify product group interoperability as it verifies that every product can successfully interact and interoperate with the other products in the test group using the test criteria. This test marked the second time the SAML 2.0 eGovernment (eGov) Profile, Version 1.5, was included in the event. The eGov profile was produced as a result of a multi-government effort to create a SAML conformance profile for government-centric identity management. “CA Technologies is especially pleased to receive the Kantara Initiative’s SAML 2.0 certification for CA Federation Manager. To P3 and Kantara Community, The Privacy Framework sub-group has championed the development of a privacy framework for federated credential management. At this time we are looking for privacy and identity champions to contribute to this effort by summarising a principle, contributing to the draft of a privacy framework overview document and contribute to the development of a framework. Currently there is a gap between the privacy and identity management community, privacy expertise is needed to support the development of privacy framework recommendations that inform the development of identity and trust frameworks. For our next steps we require help in evaluating the principles we have discovered and combining them together to produce a meaningful set. Background: The PFSG was formed 6 months ago as a sub-group of Kantara's P3WG. During this time we have discovered relevant materials and compiled a list of privacy principles that form the basis of privacy and public policy for the development of a privacy framework for identity management. Scope: To draft a Privacy Framework overview that can offer guidance and be used to discuss and further develop an identity privacy framework. To present this document in a manner that supports Identity Assurance and initiatives like FICAM and NSTIC trust frameworks. In summary, a privacy framework is intended to provide the legal and policy practices for the technical management of credentials in trust and privacy relationships. So far we have developed a description of a privacy framework based on best practices and regulations, along with a discovery of privacy principles and how they relate to the development of privacy compliant profiles. Upon completion of the principle summaries, the discovery will be collated into an overview document for editing and discussion. At this time we are looking for members and participants with privacy expertise to contribute to this review and overview. For those familiar with privacy and identity, the commitment is minimal and aimed at contributing to the discussion of privacy and trust in Identity Management. Principle summaries completed to date: Notice - (references - Purpose Specification) Data Quality Proportionality Openness Consent - (references - Use Limitation) We need volunteers for the remaining principles. Safeguards Enforcement Access and Correction Accountability The principle summary template can be found here. Examples of already submitted principles can be found here!
