Call for Nominations: Kantara MVP + Free RSA Security Conference Pass

All - Kantara Initiative is announcing a Most Valuable Participant (MVP) Award. We would like to show our appreciation for the participant who has clearly worked hard, showed leadership, and provided the most valuable contributions to their Working Group or Discussion Group during the past year. The participant selected as the Kantara Initiative MVP will be recognized at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco in March [1]. In order to attend, the MVP will also receive a complimentary pass to the conference (valued at US$2,195). As a community-driven initiative, we would like to provide everyone with the opportunity to nominate who they believe to be the Kantara MVP. Anyone on this distribution is welcome to send the name of their nominee to me, along with any statement of support you feel appropriate. The only limitations on eligibility are that the nominee must be a Participant (as defined by the Kantara Bylaws [2]), and cannot be a member of the Kantara Initiative staff (or paid contractor). The MVP award will be presented to an individual -- either an individual Participant or someone working for a Participant company/organization. Please send your nominations to me (adams(a)isoc.org) by 23:59 UTC on Tuesday, January 19th. The Leadership Council will then vote on the MVP, and the recipient notified thereafter. In case the selected MVP is unable to attend the RSA Security Conference, the recipient can opt to transfer the pass to someone else. That person will then accept the MVP award on behalf of the MVP. Thank you all for helping to make the first year of the Kantara Initiative a success, and we look forward to honoring the person you feel to be a standout participant. High Praise & Best Wishes for Britta Glade

Dear Britta, As many of the active participants copied here already know, it was with a heavy heart that we accepted your resignation effective December 31, 2009 as you agreed to take on an exciting full-time employment opportunity at RSA, the Security Division of EMC. I want to publicly thank you for giving us considerable notice and working so tirelessly over the past several weeks to ensure Kantara Initiative's Identity Assurance Program was live and all other major projects you were leading had been cleanly transitioned. I will preface the rest of this memo by saying this is not "goodbye", simply "see you soon" -- March 1st at our RSA pre-conference workshop in fact! Although your duties for EMC today don't require industry initiative participation, I'm confident you'll be back "shaping the future of digital identity" in no time. But enough of that, now for the fun part! It was my privilege to contemplate a fitting expression of our collective gratitude for your selfless service to this industry for nearly a decade. When the vacation home in Hawaii was taken off the table by the economic downturn and other tax status considerations, I reverted to the idea of collecting these words of appreciation from some of the folks you have worked closely with and impacted the most over your distinguished tenure. The following testimonials were collected over just the past several days, which goes to show that even the people you haven't worked with in many years are still vividly aware of your talent and contributions to the success of our industry. I have had the pleasure of working with Britta on multiple marketing projects within Liberty and during the Kantara launch over the past couple of years. We had a successful inaugral face-to-face meeting in September where we co-located with DIDW. Many thanks to you all for your support this year; we look forward to further growth and activity in the new year. ------------------------------ NEWLY FORMED GROUPS Three new groups: the Telecommunications Identity Work Group (TI WG), Identity & Access Services (IAS WG) and the Mind The Gap Discussion Groups (MTG DG) were launched recently.* * WG - Telecommunications Identity<http://kantarainitiative.org/confluence/display/telcoid/Home> The ultimate goal of the Telecommunications Identity (TelcoID) Work Group is to help reconcile fragmented efforts in the telco specifications development area and in the telco market place regarding identity management. In order to achieve that, it will act as a forum to facilitate the dialog between Kantara Initiative and the telco industry sector. Additionally, it will produce telco-specific technical material on top of Kantara Initiative specifications as necessary to ensure proper implementation of suitable Kantara Initiative technologies in a telco infrastructure. Identity can represent a physical individual, a collection of individuals, a logical entity, a resource or a capability. Identity is a fundamental element for establishing and maintaining business relationships, and for describing the credentials, capabilities, and responsibilities of parties to a relationship. The principal business problem that drove the formation of the original Identity Services Working Group (under the auspices of Burton Group) is the difficulties companies face when integrating vendor Identity management (IdM) products with their existing infrastructure and, increasingly, in integrating vendor products themselves. As vendors continue to add to their IdM suites, integration between products is a challenge of increasing concern to organizations. Kantara response to OIF RFI (timing issue)

Thank you again for providing us with the OIF RFI on behalf of the JSC. We have started working on our response to the RFI. In discussions with our Assurance Review Board we concluded that our Board of Trustees needs to participate in our response to the RFI. Since our Board of Trustees will not have the opportunity to discuss the RFI until their next meeting on December 3rd, there is no way of us to meet the response deadline of December 1st. Please advise whether the one week turnaround requirement (over a US holiday, I might add) is a firm deadline. To be clear, our Board will have their first discussion regarding the RFI on December 3rd but I do not expect we will be able to provide a response on that date. Protect Network Temporarly Down

Dear Community, We've learned that the Protect Network IdP is currently down. This means that any participants with a Protect Network IdP will not be able to login to the confluence (wiki) site. This issue is temporary but unfortunately not in our control. We are monitoring Protect Network for their resolution. I will keep this list apprised of the issue as it develops. I was struck by the clear thinking in Matt Zimmerman's blog post "Open vs. open vs. open: a model for public collaboration" (see link below).
