I hear you. That being said it is the case that the state isn’t a marketplace player and if it mandates an mDL there will be a significant number of adopters - such as government workers or commercial drivers - who may not have a lot of choice in the matter.

This will be an interesting space for years.

My own take is the mDL will not be adopted if you cannot do all the stuff that you do today.

1. Drive

2. buy alcohol or drugs

3. travel on restricted planes and boats

4. identify yourself to your hospital/doctor/lab

5. rent a car or similar hi-value item

6. add your own use that needs an 18013 card to access

No word yet on whether such documents as SIN numbers and work permits would be included in Ontario's digital ID program, but British Columbia and Alberta have both "integrated their digital identities with the Federal Government to enable residents to access federal services with their provincially issued digital IDs as an alternative to linking online banking information."
