The Salary Survey results are in
You may have already pawed through it, but, if not, make sure you grab a copy of the 2017 IAPP-OneTrust Privacy Professionals Salary Survey. Released biennially these results give you a baseline for salary negotiations, whether you're job hunting or looking to hire and augment your team.
We also, in each report, do an in-depth focus into a particular portion of the profession. Two years ago, we looked at gender balance, and were pleased to see a profession with a 50/50 split between the genders and relative (relative!) parity in the way men and women are compensated. This year, we examined the path to the profession. With just 11 percent of privacy professions reporting privacy as their first job, it's not surprising that there is a wide variance in how people came to our profession.
It's also not surprising that many of you were lawyers in other fields. But we are also now seeing significant groups of people coming from IT and infosecurity, and that should also be an indication that those kinds of skill sets are in demand throughout the privacy industry. Hey, 3 percent of you even came from marketing — did CAN-SPAM and CASL get your juices flowing?
Finally, while correlation is not necessarily causation, we would be remiss if we did not point out the nice salary bump experienced by those with an IAPP certification. While the overall median salary is $115,000, those with any IAPP certification make $123,000, and those with multiple certifications make $137,200. Not bad!
As always, we're also looking for feedback on how this document can be more useful for you. Let us know at publications@iapp.org.
