This notice will be sent out for public review and comment on January 21, 2026. As a member of Kantara, you are receiving an advance copy and opportunity for review and comment ahead of the public comment period. Dear Kantara Member, As part of your Kantara Initiative membership, you are receiving early access to the draft Kantara criteria aligned with NIST Special Publication 800-63A, Version 4, ahead of its public release. We invite you to review the attached documents and provide your feedback. Please review each tab in the file and share any feedback. There is no need to focus on cross-referencing at this stage; that work will be completed for the final publication. This draft covers only Volume 63A – Identity Proofing. Drafts for 63B and 63C will be released next, in that order. You may submit feedback immediately using the attached comment form. The draft criteria will be publicly released in the first week of December, with the public comment period ending by 20 January 2026. Please ensure your feedback is submitted before that date. Members: Please share with anyone at your organization who may be interested in participating! _____________________________________________________________________ - Biometric Data Discussion Group (Biometrics DG): The Biometric Data Discussion Group (Biometrics) will address the management, security, and privacy of biometric data, from collection to destruction, with a focus on practical application and GDPR compliance. While standards do exist, they are often inaccessible to non-experts, and there is a need to decode and translate existing standards into a straightforward, practical guide for real-world application. The holistic risk universe will explore three risk domains in depth: Trustworthiness: Is this credential trustworthy?; Privacy: What privacy risks do holders incur when using this credential?/ Security: What are the end-to-end security risks associated with this credential?. While these tools can significantly enhance productivity, creativity, and efficiency, they also introduce serious risks. Shadow AI will explore the causes, implications, and mitigation strategies related to Shadow AI in enterprise environments. The release of NIST SP 800-63 v4 provides a modern, modular framework for identity proofing, and Kantara's US Assurance Program is poised to develop the corresponding assessment criteria. While these developments are foundational, they leave critical market-level and downstream challenges unaddressed.
