Not sure why Gosplan is such a great metaphor for individual autonomy in a
context of distrust. :-) Does this entire topic have to be such a
constantly tangled web of tensions and oxymorons? I keep wondering if the
goal of *perfect* scale is the enemy of the good. I've seen too many
instances of insistence on a perfect future state compromising the ability
to achieve incremental progress (not even referring to geopolitical topics
here, just standards work).

I think it's a commentary on idealogues in general. And there is no
shortage of them in blockchain land. Treating blockchain as a tool while
understanding it's risks and benefit - No problem. Treating blockchain (or
any other technology) as an ideology that will solve all problems - Problem.
The reductio ad absurdum argument is to point to the potential horrors of a
society ruled by technology rules, instead of human governance.
++1 to comment on *perfect *scale. The perfect IS the enemy of the good -
especially in standards work where competing interests, agendas,
personalities and views almost certainly suggests that any standard that
gets through the process will be a compromise and, if you're lucky, a
compromise that makes everyone equally unhappy with the compromises that
they made;-)

John Wunderlich
