I have a NYCID. It can get you a library card and some museums and it can be used as ID for things like access to some City services like GED, SNAP, Section 8 housing and cash assistance, buying alcohol, getting into buildings and the like. You can get one if you are 10 or older so in some respects it’s an advancement over other forms of ID. For work you would need the id and some other proof of work authorization.

This is so heartbreaking. It sounds like having a reliable way of communicating basic information about services available and their restrictions would go a long way in getting folks to stay indoors instead of braving the bitter cold ☹ [signature_3408297431] Jorge Flores | Co-founder and CTO | M: 323-309-2306 | https://www.entidad.io<https://www.entidad.io/> From: jim kragh <kragh65@gmail.com> Date: Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 6:10 PM To: Noreen Whysel <nwhysel@gmail.com> Cc: wg-riup <wg-riup@kantarainitiative.org> Subject: [WG-RIUP] Re: Article Thanks for sharing, yes, that is a critical life saving event and gives a true meaning to RIUP's mission On Thu, Jan 18, 2024, 8:47 PM Noreen Whysel <nwhysel@gmail.com<mailto:nwhysel@gmail.com>> wrote: It’s a crisis here and will be a major issue in this year mayor’s election. While the NYC ID does offer some benefits - it is the wrong way to go. In WA state the DMV has been funded to issue ID cards for the homeless at no cost. The advantage is that when mDL arrives, these cards will automatically achieve digital form. WA state issues nearly 200 different forms of id or licenses. The states need to take on the task of coming up with a single ID method that can be used, and enabled digitally, for all use cases. ..tom On Thu, Jan 18, 2024 at 7:19 PM Jorge Flores <jorge@entidad.io> wrote:

That makes sense for NYC to do that. I only wanted not that is not a step forward towards DII. ..tom On Fri, Jan 19, 2024 at 11:57 AM Noreen Whysel <nwhysel@gmail.com> wrote:
The thing is, it’s not a state card, but NYC has more people than 38 States do. So, NYC went ahead and did it, largely to address homeless, at risk youth and immigrants. Issues that are highly political upstate (NYS is redder than many people assume). NYCID has been around since before mDL was the hot topic it is today. NYS plans to roll out mobile licenses later this year.
